We study the biological complexity and intrinsic functional properties of microbial communities from freshwater to coastal ocean to understand their roles in major ecosystem processes including biogeochemical cycling. We use robust field based to laboratory based measurements (e.g. "omics") to understand the microbial complexity. Given the increasing anthropogenic pressures on coastal ocean, we also investigate impacts of ocean acidification on biological communities and consequences for blue economy. Over the years, I have developed numerous cheap, cost-effective and sustainable technologies that can be as well as presently being used for effective management of waste (e.g. solid waste, fecal sludge, wastewater) as well as optimize performances of sewage treatment plants. I have developed microbiome consortium based formulations that can help towards restoration of diverse ecosystems and a number of these formulations have formed the basis of start-ups and commercialized very successful. The learnings from microbial response in link with environment have helped us to delve deep and investigate challenging issues such as bacterial nosocomial infections as well as undertake targeted biodiscovery of novel secondary metabolites.
