The department has strong expertise in physical, organic and inorganic chemistry, along with interdisciplinary research spanning physics, biology, earth science and materials science. Founded in 2020, the Department of Computational and Data Sciences focuses on advanced computing techniques. The department trains students and researchers in modern computational methods, with primary research areas including text processing and data science.

Established in 2007, the Department of Earth Sciences was the first of its kind among IISERs. The department aims to build a strong research community in environmental and ecological studies, isotope geochemistry and biogeochemical studies, and solid earth sciences.
